Calendar of Events at the Museum

The Arkell Museum offers programs for all ages that enlighten and entertain while celebrating art and regional history. We are constantly updating this schedule of film showings, concerts, lectures, workshops, and family activities, so check back often. Museum members will receive reduced or free admission to most programs!

The Tugboat Urger

Make a Splash Family Day

1:30pm at the museum with Jeff Boyer’s “Magic Bubble” show in the Arkell Museum’s Great Hall.  Boyer’s interactive show teaches kids the science behind bubbles and explores ways in which bubbles make our lives easier, softer and even taste better!  Boyer will create pyramid and cube shaped bubbles, and for his finale will place a member of the audience inside a bubble. 

From 3 to 6pm, the New York State Canal Corporation’s Tugboat “Urger” will dock at the Canajoharie Waterfront for family tours and crew demonstrations. 

Also at the Canajoharie Waterfront from 3 to 6pm, legendary folk singer George Ward will perform songs of the Erie Canal.

Families can also visit the Arkell Museum’s new summer exhibition “Reflections on Water in American Painting:  The Phelan Collection,” a temporary double-gallery show of maritime paintings.

Selected Shorts

The hit public radio series Selected Shorts tours to Canajoharie, New York! Host Isaiah Sheffer leads a cast of terrific actors, including Tony Award-winners Joanna Gleason and James Naughton performing spellbinding classic and new short stories about seaside escapades, to go along with the exhibition “Reflections on Water” The lineup features Italo Calvino’s hilarious “The Adventure of a Reader,” about a man simultaneously reading and romancing at the beach; Doris Lessing’s “Through the Tunnel,” a tale of a young English boy’s underwater quest; and Chekhov’s classic story of a seaside affair, “The Lady with the Little Dog.”

Tickets to this event are $20.00 for the performance or $30.00 for preferred seating and reception with the actors after the show at the Arkell Museum.

Get Your Writing Published! Panel Discussion and Publishing Fair

Learn tips on how to get your writing published. Our panel of experts in the publishing field will present on topics that include: literary agents, current trends in publishing, getting your work noticed, and many others. Several local small presses will have tables set up and will be available all day to answer questions. This event is free and requires no registration.

Arkell Museum Holiday Fair

Support local artisans and spend the afternoon at our 4th annual Holiday Fair featuring: over a dozen local artisan vendors selling handmade goods, activities for families, a huge used book sale, free museum admission with a suggested $2 donation, baked goods and lunch sale, plus museum tours!
