The popular Sensory Friendly Public Program returns to the Arkell Museum, free for individuals with Autism or other special needs, and their families and caregivers. Museum Studies students of the Cooperstown Graduate Program (SUNY Oneonta) have created engaging experiences at the Arkell Museum with reduced auditory, olfactory, and visual stimuli for a sensory-friendly visit to the museum.
The Arkell Museum will be open for people on the Autism spectrum and those who have special needs related to sensory sensitivity and their friends and family. With help from student volunteers, the program will offer hands-on, interactive, sensory-friendly opportunities to enjoy the museum in a stress-free environment. There will be a scavenger hunt, book reading, music, sensory objects that relate to the specific pieces of artwork, and other activities. Visitors will be able to make their own artwork inspired the museum’s collection. A quiet, resting space will also be provided.
