American Impressionists: Masterworks in Watercolor and Pastel
May 28 - October 21, 2012

Mary Cassatt
Portrait of Matilde Valiet, c.1890.
This is a rare opportunity to view pastels and watercolors by America’s leading Impressionist artists including Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, and Maurice Prendergast. Pastels and watercolors first gained recognition as finished works of art when French and American Impressionists exhibited them at the end of the 19th century. The artists in this exhibition used these two mediums on paper to render beach scenes, landscapes and portraits. Fragile works on paper are hardly ever exhibited because they must be protected from light— so this could be your only opportunity to see some of these American Impressionist masterworks.
Childe Hassam
Brush House, 1902.
